Arriola and Smith selected as Sea Grant Fellows

North Carolina Sea Grant and the N.C. Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve Program awarded a 2015 Coastal Reserve Fellowship to Jill Arriola.

This joint program is designed to foster research within the boundaries of the reserve and address a coastal management issue. Arriola, a doctoral student with Jaye Cable in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Marine Sciences Department, studies coastal hydrology and geochemistry.

Earlier this year, UNC’s Carter Smith was selected as a 2015 N.C. Coastal Policy Fellows. The fellowship, supported by North Carolina Sea Grant and the N.C. Coastal Resources Law, Planning and Policy Center, is designed to foster research on a policy issue within the state’s 20 coastal counties during an academic semester. Smith is a doctoral candidate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Institute of Marine Sciences. Her academic advisor is Pete Peterson, an IMS researcher who studies coastal habitat valuation and restoration.
