We are excited to announce that Eve Eisemann is the recipient of the Deborah M. Dexter Institute of Marine Sciences PhD Scholarship for Spring-Summer of 2025. Eve is a coastal geomorphologist (Rodriguez Lab) studying the patterns and drivers of change across barrier island and oyster reef systems.

Dr. Dexter was the first UNC graduate student to receive a PhD (’67) while being a full-time resident at IMS. Following her trailblazing at IMS, she went on to have a long career as a faculty member at San Diego State University. She established the Scholarship Fund “to provide funding for an accomplished PhD student in residence at the Institute of Marine Sciences”.

Thanks to Niels Lindquist and the review committee for their work to identify our first Dexter Scholarship recipient.

And congratulations Eve!
