Title: Access to a Range of Scales: Tools and Targets
Abstract: The primary tools of the physical oceanographer are the governing equations. Their use, because of their complexity, tends to segregate physical oceanographers according to the simplifications they can make to the equations – simplifications that often depend critically on the scale of the processes examined. Using new measurement possibilities, next generation analysis techniques, and the combination of research and observatory assets, a range of processes of broad cross-disciplinary interest across adjacent scales can be assessed. Some examples and a detailed discussion of Langmuir circulation and its importance on continental shelves will be presented.
