Seminar: Dr. Sven Kranz – FSU

September 24, 2021 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

UNC-CH’s Department of Earth, Marine, and Environmental Sciences is proud to host a guest seminar by Dr. Sven Kranz. This event is scheduled for Friday, September 24th, at 12:30 pm. This seminar is in person and will be broadcasted live online via Zoom (Meeting ID: 994 3817 3742).

Presenter Affiliation: Associate Professor, Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science, Phytoplankton Ecophysiology and Biogeochemistry groupFlorida State University, Tallahassee, FL.

Title: Phytoplankton Ecology and Environmental Change — Life in a dynamic environment explored from multiple perspectives.

Abstract: Despite their microscopic size, phytoplankton are responsible for about half of the global primary production. This diverse group of organisms is an integral component of the global biosphere, driving biogeochemical cycles of important elements while exporting large amounts of carbon to deep waters and sediments. In this talk I will present data from a multimethod assessment of primary productivity relationships in the California Current Ecosystem upwelling region from an Lagrangian perspective. I will further present data on the effect of iron and light on photophysiology and d15N NO32- isotope fractionation in natural communities and lab-cultures from the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean.
