Seminar: Dr. Scott Ensign, Aquatic Analysis and Consulting, LLC

August 31, 2016 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Dr. Scott EnsignUNC Marine Sciences’ Distinguished Professor Chris Martens hosts a seminar presented by Scott Ensign, Ph.D.

Seminar Title: Three Scales of Environmental Research: How Our Science Leads to Real-World Solutions

Presenter Affiliation: Aquatic Analysis and Consulting, LLC

Summary: Aquatic and marine scientists solve environmental problems by linking research across three scales: micro, macro, and commercial. I will use examples from my research to critique this sequence of problem-solving, starting with my discovery of how a micro-scale process helps salt marshes adapt to sea level rise. At the macro-scale, I’ll present a novel framework for improving how biological processes are measured in rivers and estuaries. Finally, I’ll share my experience from a start-up company and propose that commercial-scale research not only provides a direct path to solving problems, but also enriches our basic research.
