Title: Survival strategies of dinoflagellates in diverse marine environments with emphasis on feeding ability

Abstract: Dinoflagellate is one of the most ubiquitous microplankton groups in marine environments with diatoms. They play diverse roles in marine ecosystems as primary producers, predators, prey, symbiotic partners, and parasites. Also, they are not only notorious for causing prevalent harmful algal blooms off the coast but are often reported in the oceanic waters. However, we still lack research on their survival and/or dominance mechanisms at the species level and especially in HNLC oceanic waters. In my research, new dinoflagellate species were established as new structures of marine ecosystems. Furthermore, key eco-physiological characteristics that each species has adopted for survival/dominance were explored. Finally, these lab-based studies were applied to understand ecological phenomena observed in the field.
