Facility Rentals

IMS has a small fleet of vessels available for use by both IMS and non-IMS users. Different rates and restrictions will apply.

  • All vessels must be operated by an IMS certified boat captain.
  • Costs do not include fuel. Fuel costs will be in addition to hourly rates.
  • Overtime costs for personnel will be assessed after 8 hours on weekdays.
  • Overtime costs for personnel will be assessed all day for Saturdays and holidays.
  • Fuel and overtime personnel charges will be assessed at current cost.

Small boats

  • Trailered flat boats are for inshore use only.
  • Two hour minimum use.
  • Hourly rate begins when boat leaves IMS property and ends when boat returns.

Small boat fees

Non UNC-CH user:

  • $250.00 per day or $31.25 per hour; plus
  • $30.00 per hour for IMS boat captain

UNC-CH user:

  • $150.00 /day or $18.75/ hour if self-captained; (*Note captain must be IMS certified) or
  • $150.00 /day, plus $30.00 /hour for IMS boat captain

IMS user:
General use IMS purchased boats

  • $150.00 /day or $18.75 /hour if self-captained; (*Note captain must be IMS certified) or
  • $150 /day plus $30/hour for IMS boat captain

The R/V Capricorn is a 48′ Defender Yacht that can accommodate up to 20 passengers plus crew. Specifications on the R/V Capricorn can be found here.

  • The R/V Capricorn must be operated by a USCG licensed, IMS approved boat captain.
  • 4 hour minimum billing on all trips.
  • Price includes captain and one crew member at regular time. Additional crew or overtime/weekend/holiday hours will incur additional costs.
  • Need for additional crew depends on multiple factors and is at the discretion of the captain.

R/V Capricorn fees

Base charges:

  1. $100.00 per hour regular time (up to 8hrs weekdays) or $125.00 per hour overtime e.g. > 8 hrs weekdays or all day Saturdays/holidays; plus
  2. $80.00 cleanup fee; plus
  3. Fuel charge = gallons used @ current price per gallon

Additional charges:

  • Any crew, beyond the included captain and one mate, will incur an hourly charge
  • Any overtime (>8 hrs on weekday, any hours on Saturday or holiday) will incur additional charges.

*Note R/V Capricorn is unavailable on Sundays

The R/V Capricorn is a recently renovated and equipped vessel available primarily for use in coastal research and education. The vessel is a 1980 Defender Yacht that can accommodate up to 20 passengers plus crew. The cabin provides space for laboratory instrumentation, as well as facilities for navigation, communication, and living aboard.

While primarily configured for university groups, we have a limited ability to accommodate other school groups, under the following conditions:

  • High School Groups (9th – 12th Grade): 1 adult chaperone per 10 students
  • Middle School Groups (6th – 8th Grade): 1 adult chaperone per 5 students; Students must wear life jackets;
  • Elementary School Groups (5th grade and lower): we are unable to accommodate this age group

Normally, trips are scheduled on week days. Saturday trips will depend on crew availability. No Sunday trips will be scheduled unless requested by the IMS Director.

Effective July 1, 2011, charges for the R/V Capricorn will be as follows:

  • $100 per hour for weekday trips of up to 8 hours
  • $125 per hour for overtime (weekdays over 8 hours; Saturdays, holidays)
  • Preparation and clean up fee: $80
  • Capricorn fuel usage: at cost
  • Additional required personnel overtime: at cost
 (2nd Mate as required by law and any additional personnel.)

There is a half day minimum for all uses on the R/V Capricorn.
Estimates on fuel and personnel costs will be available on request.
The R/V Capricorn is not available on Sundays.

The UNC-CH Institute of Marine Sciences is an organizational member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) and abides by their standards.

IMS has a small, basic dorm facility available for use. There are separate student and faculty accommodations.
Use of the UNC IMS dormitory must be for UNC or Marine Science related activities.

Student accommodations:

  • Two bunk rooms – one for female students, one for male students. Each bunk room can sleep 8.
  • Towels and linens are not provided

Faculty accommodations:

  • Two rooms are available. One room sleeps two people (2 twin beds), and one room sleeps four (2 bunk beds)
  • Common room with microwave and refrigerator
  • Towels and linens are provided

*Note there are no cooking facilities. There is a bbq available on the common deck space.

Reservations

Reservations may be made in advance. How far in advance depends on your affiliation:

  • UNC IMS individuals/groups: 12 months in advance.
  • UNC-CH individuals/groups: 6 months in advance.
  • Other groups: Reservations may be made up to 3 months in advance.

Rates

  • Student accommodations: $10 per night per person
  • Faculty accommodations: $30 per night for one bedroom; $60 for both bedrooms

Check In/Out

  • Check In 3:00 PM. If you need to check in after 5:00 PM arrangements can be made.
  • Check Out 10:00 AM.

Cancellation Policy

  • Two weeks notice prior to scheduled stay is required.
  • Groups will be responsible for the cost of all reserved beds that are not cancelled at least 2 weeks prior to a scheduled stay.

Of Special Note

Depending on your length of stay, and your affiliations with IMS, you may be required to have an IMS-performed background check before your reservation can be finalized.

If you are required to have a background check, you are required to bear all associated costs, which typically range between $50 – 80 per person.

Keep in mind that you should allow 1-2 weeks to process a background check.

UNC-Chapel Hill students and all individuals under the age of 18 and in high school are exempt from this policy.

When calling to inquire about a reservation, Ms Napier will be able to let you know if you are required to have a background check or not.

The Institute has a number of shared spaces available for groups:

  • Teaching classroom (seats 18)
  • Teaching lab

All rooms have Wi-Fi eduroam and guest internet access.

  • Name of person reserving room
  • Purpose of reservation
  • Title of event if applicable
  • Is a notice on the entry sign being requested?
  • Will there be a need for video-conferencing (Zoom meeting or Zoom Webinar)?
