Marine Conservation Ecology / Fisheries Ecology – The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level at the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS). We seek emerging leaders in the field of interdisciplinary marine conservation ecology, with particular interest in candidates that engage fishery systems and communities. To compliment IMS’s current faculty, areas of desired expertise include, but are not limited to, quantitative tools/approaches, ecological economics, response(s) of fisheries and coastal communities to climate change, food-web interactions in the context of ecosystem-based management, zooplankton dynamics, and molecular tools (population genetics through environmental genomics). Expectations include leading vibrant externally funded research programs, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, teaching in IMS’s field site program, advising graduate students and resident undergraduates, as well as engaging stakeholders and counseling resource managers. Preference will be given to applicants whose research portfolio would include field research that takes advantage of the IMS’s location, infrastructure, and interdisciplinary collaborative research. These elements support the University’s mission to serve North Carolina, the United States, and the world through teaching, research, and public service.
IMS is located on waterfront property in Morehead City, NC, embedded within a collaborative network of nearby university (i.e., NCSU’s CMAST, Duke Marine Lab), state (NC Division of Marine Fisheries) and federal (NOAA Beaufort Lab) marine research and management units. Our infrastructure includes a 50,000-sqft office and laboratory complex, 5,500-sqft wet lab, 6,000-sqft machine shop, 25,000-sqft outdoor mesocosm farm, and 2,250-sqft dormitory. IMS is in close proximity to a diverse array of estuarine and nearshore habitats ideal for experimental field research given the relatively mild seasonal climate, as well as cultural and economic significance of coastal marine resources in this region. To reach these environments, IMS maintains a fleet of trucks/vans and research vessels (17-48’), as well as an AAUS-certified dive program.
