Seminar: Dr. Amala Mahadevan, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

November 1, 2017 @ 3:35 pm - 4:45 pm

Visiting guest seminar speaker Amala Mahadevan from Woods Hole Oceanographic InstituteUNC Marine Sciences’ is proud to host a seminar by Amala Mahadevan, Ph.D.

Presenter Affiliation: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Title: How submesoscale processes mediate phytoplankton blooms

Abstract: Submesoscale dynamics in the upper ocean have a two-pronged effect: On the one hand, they enhance vertical motion and the supply nutrients for phytoplankton. On the other hand, they restratify the mixed layer by the eddy-driven reconfiguration of density.  Here, we will examine how these processes affect the blooming of phytoplankton in different regimes, ranging from subtropical to subpolar gyres and assess their effect on the biological pump.
