Title: Uncontrolled conduits for carbon flux in coastal systems
Abstract: Numerous exchanges of material flux occur in coastal areas, globally. In this study, I will discuss two “uncontrolled” conduits for material flux at the coast: the atmosphere and groundwater. Specifically, I will discuss 1) organic carbon concentration and composition associated with recent Atlantic hurricanes and 2) emerging organic contaminant transport from septic systems to headwater streams in coastal plain soils of eastern NC. Collectively, these vectors may result in significant amounts of carbon and organic contaminant exchange in coastal areas of the Atlantic seaboard.
